Rev. Leo N. Sheltreau: Biography-3

Father Sheltreau

Founder, St. John Bosco Church

In June 1956, Detroit Cardinal Edward Mooney asked to meet Father Sheltreau. Leo was of course very nervous about meeting His Eminence for the first time; "What did I do now?" was his first reaction. As Father Leo recalled, "The good and gracious Cardinal immediately set me at ease by warmly greeting me...and stating simply 'I want you to be a pastor in a new parish...St. John Bosco...'"

The Groundbreaking Ceremony was in June 1957, and by September 1958, the new St. John Bosco church was completed. Father Leo served as its founding priest until his retirement in 1980.

He was warmly remembered by his congregation. "He brought people into the church by listening to them, talking to them, and doing things for them...He walked into the room and it brightened up...He was always cheery..."
