Philadelphia's Peoples Regatta

Philadelphia's Peoples Regatta was first run circa 1880 under the auspices of the Schuylkill Navy. The mile-and-a-quarter contests were held every year on July 4th before thousands of fans racing fans. In 1958, the name was changed to the Independence Day Regatta, in honor of the Schuylkill Navy's 100th anniversary.

John Schmitt competed in the People's Regatta from 1925 - 1930, with his four-oared shell teammates winning in 1925 and 1930.
