Alice Welbes' 1932 Elgin Model 818

Alice's 1932 Elgin Model 818 Wristwatch

Alice Welbes was awarded this Art Deco styled watch for winning the Oregon State 4-H Canning championship in 1932. It is engraved, “Alice Welbes ~ State Winner ~ 4-H Canning 1932 ~ Donor ~ Kerr Glass Mfg. Corp.

The Elgin is Model 818 from their 1930 Catalog -- a "slender, smart wrist watch, traced with delicate black enamel". It has an 18/O size 15 jewel movement, featuring a 14K white gold filled case with an engraved geometric pattern on the top, sides and crown. The watch measures 1-1/4" tall x 3/4" wide including the crown​.

The Model 818 retailed for $45 in 1932 -- about $1,000 in 2025!!  An incredibly valuable prize for a young girl from rural Oregon!
